Last spring, a designer from a Scandinavian outdoor furniture company emailed our sales team. She'd found our Candiani denim at a textile trade show and fell for the hand feel. On her mood board, a swatch of our 14 oz. selvedge was labelled fabric privacy screen outdoor — prototype.
Flattering? Sure. Feasible? Less so.
I'm the guy who reviews every order before it leaves the mill—roughly 400 unique SKUs a year. In 2024, I rejected about 6% of first production lots because of shade, crocking, or hand issues. I don't say that to sound tough; it's just the job. And that job includes telling people when our own product is the wrong answer.
She asked two questions that ended up teaching me a lot:
- Denim is a cotton twill fabric, so it's durable, right?
- Could we add nylon to make it stretchy over a metal frame?
Let me answer the second one first, because it's the one that causes the most confusion.
What Cotton Twill Actually Does Well
Denim is cotton twill. The diagonal weave gives it that distinctive texture and, more importantly, a tight construction that resists abrasion better than most plain-weave fabrics at the same weight. A 12 oz. denim jacket can take years of friction and wear. That's exactly why denim started as workwear.
But abrasion resistance is not the same as outdoor durability. Cotton absorbs water. It breathes, which is great in clothing, but not in something meant to stay dimensionally stable in rain. When 14 oz. denim gets wet, it gains weight, stretches, and then tightens again as it dries. On a fixed privacy screen frame, that's the recipe for sagging, buckling, and rust at every contact point.
From the outside, this looks like a fabric selection problem. The reality is it's a weathering problem. Sun and rain are harsher testers than any instrument we use in the mill. According to Cotton Incorporated's educational materials, cotton twill is well suited to apparel and dry upholstery, but cotton has limited inherent resistance to UV-driven oxidation compared to synthetic fibres. That doesn't mean cotton is bad. It means you shouldn't hang it in the sun for four years and expect it to behave like plastic.
The Nylon Stretch Myth
Is nylon fabric stretchy? Not in the way most people think.
Nylon is a synthetic polyamide with good elasticity at the molecular level. But a woven nylon taffeta or ripstop has almost no two-way stretch. The reason yoga pants and swimwear stretch is not nylon alone—it's nylon blended with elastane, or it's a knit construction. If you take nylon filament yarn and weave it tight, you get a crisp, stable fabric, not a bouncy one.
In the mill, we test stretch with a modified ASTM D3107 method. A typical denim with 2% elastane gives around 35–45% stretch. A 100% cotton denim and a 100% nylon woven both give maybe a few percent of mechanical give from the weave—enough for a sleeve, not enough to wrap a frame.
So adding nylon to denim would make the fabric more tear-resistant, but it would not make it stretchy. You'd need elastane for that. And elastane plus direct sunlight plus sharp frame edges is a pretty reliable way to get broken filaments within 18 months. I've seen it happen on awnings.
Why We Said No
Here's the part that made the designer think we were crazy. We said no.
In B2B, saying no feels like losing revenue. But when I emailed her, I laid it out plainly: If you install this as an outdoor privacy screen, it will fade, hold water, and warp around the frame. We don't want your first experience of Candiani to be a repair bill.
She wrote back: Ok, thank you. I thought that was the end of it.
What most buyers don't realize is that custom width is a bigger red flag than it sounds. A denim mill's looms are set for apparel width—around 155 to 160 cm. Weaving 3.5 meters for a privacy screen requires a different construction and a different finishing line. It's possible, but the square-meter cost jumps, and the lead time goes from weeks to months. The spec was the problem, not the price.
For reference, most serious outdoor screen fabrics in Europe are solution-dyed polyester or acrylic mesh with UV stabilizers. They don't have the organic texture of denim, but they hold their color for years because the pigment is in the polymer, not just on the surface.
What We Suggested Instead
I offered the designer three paths:
- For a taut outdoor screen: use a UV-stabilized acrylic or polyester mesh. It will survive the weather and keep its shape.
- For an interior divider: absolutely use our 14 oz. selvedge denim. With no weather to fight, it will look incredible for decades.
- For a decorative outdoor piece: mount the denim behind glass or a polycarbonate panel. You get the look without the UV and water damage.
She chose the third option. That conversation eventually led to a $18,000 first order for denim-covered wooden lounge panels, followed by a repeat order two months later. She also asked us for samples of a separate acrylic mesh for a pergola shade—not denim.
We lost a hypothetical one-off project and gained a client who now knows what we will and won't claim. I'm calling that a reasonable trade.
The Lesson
Transparency is its own quality spec. When someone asks for something borderline, the first delivery that fails is the one they'll remember. We avoid that by explaining the limits before there's a purchase order.
This worked for us because we're a design-focused mill with clients who value a partnership over a transaction. If you're a fast-turnaround commodity supplier, your playbook might be different. But in our case, honesty is more valuable than a one-time sale.
