When I first started working in garment quality control, I assumed choosing a fabric was mostly about how it looked. If a fabric had a beautiful color and surface, the finished garment would probably be beautiful too. Several hundred fabric inspections later, I can tell you that’s backwards.
I’m a quality and brand compliance manager at an apparel manufacturer that sews for fashion labels of all sizes. My job is to review every fabric delivery before it reaches the cutting table — roughly 250 deliveries a year, from European denim mills to specialized knit and suiting suppliers. In 2024 I sent back or rejected about 9% of first deliveries, mostly for width inconsistencies, shade mismatches, and shrinkage that failed wash testing.
Every week, an emerging designer asks us some version of the same question: “Should I choose Candiani denim, a crepe jersey fabric, or a rayon suiting fabric for my collection?” There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The right fabric depends on what you are making and how your customer will care for it.
You are probably in one of three situations:
- You are making jeans, work jackets, or sturdy trousers — you need a real woven denim, and Candiani belongs on your shortlist.
- You are making blouses, dresses, or fluid skirts — you are actually describing a crepe jersey fabric.
- You are making blazers, tailored trousers, or office separates — a rayon suiting fabric may serve you better than wool.
Let’s walk through these scenarios the way I do when we approve a fabric for production.
Scenario 1: You’re building a jeans, denim jacket, or workwear line
If a garment needs to survive years of washing, a twill-woven denim is hard to beat. The diagonal twill structure gives it strength, and the indigo warp threads create the fading character denim customers expect. Most of the denim programs we handle use 100% cotton or cotton stretch fabric ranging from about 11 to 15 oz/yd².
When brands ask for Candiani, they are not looking for a clever logo. Candiani is a denim mill near Milan, Italy. When someone in the trade talks about “Candiani jeans,” they usually mean jeans cut from Candiani selvedge or Candiani stretch denim. It is shorthand for jeans with an Italian textile pedigree, and often a more sustainable one.
If your tech pack reads “Candiani denim, Italy,” that is easy to verify. Candiani Denim Italy is a well-documented supplier, and their production claims can be checked. But in my opinion, no mill name removes the need to test the actual goods. I look for three things on every denim lot:
- Weight and width: If the spec says 13.75 oz/yd², the fabric should really be that weight. A lighter knockoff will fit and fade differently.
- Shrinkage behavior: We cut a sample and wash it the way the finished jeans will be washed. This step often reveals problems that no color card can show.
- Shade separation: Indigo can vary from roll to roll. Shade grouping matters when you are cutting hundreds of pairs; without separation, you can end up with mismatched legs or washed-out-looking batches.
One thing I tell small denim brands: do not talk yourself out of good fabric too early. If you are making a first run of 200 pairs, the difference between a premium Italian denim and a cheap alternative is a small number of dollars per garment — and it shows up in the hand feel, the durability and the fade. A serious supplier will help small brands start with trial lengths and realistic minimums. If they treat your first small order as a nuisance, that is useful information.
Scenario 2: You’re making blouses, dresses, or fluid skirts
If your reference images show fabric moving with the body instead of standing stiffly away from it, you are describing a knit. And in most cases, what creates that soft, fluid look is a crepe jersey fabric.
Crepe jersey is a knit with a slightly pebbled, matte surface. It drapes well, feels comfortable against the skin and has enough widthwise stretch to be forgiving in fitted styles. It is commonly made from viscose/rayon or a viscose blend, which is exactly why the dryer question below applies to it.
Before I approve crepe jersey, I ask for:
- Fiber composition: 100% viscose and a viscose/polyester blend need different care labels and behave differently in production.
- Fabric weight: A light 120 g/m² jersey might work for a summer blouse but will be too flimsy for a structured dress.
- Stability: We wash a sample and check if the print direction, seams and hems stay straight. Knitted fabrics can twist after washing; that is a manufacturing defect you cannot see on a small folded swatch.
The counterintuitive part: softness alone is not quality. Some very soft crepe jerseys are low twist and low durability; they pill, stretch out, or shrink when washed. If you want an easy-care garment, select composition and finishing accordingly. And don’t assume that all crepe jersey will survive a dryer cycle.
Scenario 3: You’re designing blazers, tailored trousers, or office separates
If you need a sharp silhouette, wool is often the default. But for many young brands, rayon suiting fabric is just as useful and far more approachable. This fabric looks smooth and elegant, holds a crease well, and generally costs less than wool. In warm climates, it also feels lighter than traditional suiting.
Rayon suiting is a woven fabric made from viscose/rayon fibers. Most challenges have to do with moisture rather than appearance. If you decide to use it:
- Confirm the intended care route. Some rayon suiting is washable; much of it is dry-clean only. I never approve a care label without a test.
- Test for seam puckering. Weak wet rayon fibers can cause seams to pucker after cleaning. This flaw tends to appear only after the garment has been cleaned.
- Ask for crease recovery and pilling data. A stylish suiting that bags at the elbow after two wears will not have a long retail life.
For a small brand, the biggest risk is to approve rayon suiting after looking at a swatch on a table. The test needs to happen on a real garment that goes through the care cycle your customer will use.
Wait — can you put viscose fabric in the dryer?
The short answer is usually no. Viscose, called rayon in many markets, is a regenerated cellulose fiber. It is reasonably strong when dry, but much weaker when wet. A tumble dryer pushes heat, moisture and mechanical tumbling at the fabric — a combination that can shrink it, distort its drape, and cause permanent creases or fiber damage.
I understand the temptation. A cotton t-shirt comes out fine. Why would a viscose dress not? Put another way: cotton and viscose are not the same fiber. The softer, silkier feeling of viscose and crepe jersey comes from a fiber structure that needs more careful drying.
Last year we rejected a viscose crepe jersey lot after a dryer test: the fabric shrank around 6%, and the side seams twisted in the sample garment. The supplier described it as “washable.” No one had tested it in a dryer, which meant the finished garments would have caused returns.
For clothing brands, the care label is a legal responsibility, not a suggestion. In the United States, the FTC Care Labeling Rule (16 CFR Part 423) says care instructions must have a reliable basis. If your rayon or viscose garment cannot go in a dryer, say so on the label. If it is blended with polyester or has a special finish, ask for the test evidence before you promise dryer safety.
When in doubt, air dry. It costs nothing, preserves the fiber and protects your brand from preventable quality complaints.
How to decide which scenario you’re in
If you are still not sure, here are four questions that quickly clear things up.
- What are you actually sewing? Five-pocket jeans, workwear, or denim jackets point to Scenario 1. Flowy dresses, blouses, and skirts with drape point to Scenario 2. Blazers, tailored trousers, and structured separates point to Scenario 3.
- Who is your customer and how will they wash? If they expect machine washing and easy care, avoid 100% viscose styles unless you have test data showing the fabric can handle it.
- What quality story matters? For denim, the mill and its environmental record matter; that is why Candiani is a respected name. For suiting, structure, stability and finishing matter more than the label. For jersey, fiber content and wash stability matter most.
- What is your trial order quantity? Whatever the material, the supplier should be willing to provide samples, wash data and a realistic small first order. You don’t have to choose between being respected and being large; professional suppliers work with both.
If you are still torn, do what our lab does: order a small quantity, sew a sample garment, wash it and actually wear it. A fabric that looks good on the roll but fails in daily use is not the right fabric for your brand. The one that survives that test — whether it is Candiani denim, crepe jersey fabric, or rayon suiting — is the one we will happily approve.
