Fabric Selection Without the Hype: A Candiani Quality Inspector's Guide to Denim, Velvet, and Rayon

When should you choose sustainable denim from Italy? When is red velvet upholstery fabric the right call? And what about rayon fabric shirts? Candiani's quality compliance manager breaks it down by scenario.

I get asked a variation of the same question at least once a week, whether it's a denim brand in Los Angeles, an upholstery manufacturer in North Carolina, or a shirt designer in Paris: "What's the best fabric?"

It's a trap. Not because the person asking is trying to trip me up—but because what they're actually asking is, "What's the best fabric for my product, my customer, and my sustainability agenda?" Those details change the answer completely.

Here's the thing: I review roughly 200+ unique fabric deliveries every year as a quality and brand compliance manager at Candiani, an Italian denim mill in Robecchetto con Induno that's been weaving since 1938. Our heritage is real—and so is our investment in sustainable production. In our Q1 2024 quality audit, I rejected 11% of first deliveries because they didn't meet specification: color deviations beyond tolerance, shrinkage rates outside contract limits, inconsistent hand feel across rolls. I've learned that when someone comes to me with a "best fabric" question, the most useful thing I can do is walk them through three distinct scenarios. Here they are.

Scenario A: Durable Apparel With a Credible Sustainability Story

If you're producing jeans, workwear, jackets, or premium casual pieces—and your market expects genuine environmental action, not greenwashing—sustainable denim from Italy is a strong candidate.

Let me use my own mill as an example rather than speaking in abstracts. Candiani Denim's sustainability program covers three pillars:

  • Regenerative and organic cotton sourcing: we buy cotton through programs that restore soil health and reduce water usage compared to conventional farming.
  • Circular dyeing: our proprietary indigo system reduces chemical usage by up to 90% compared with conventional indigo dyeing, and it doesn't rely on toxic reducing agents.
  • Water recovery: our dyehouse recovers and reuses 95% of its water. That's not a promise—it's an infrastructure investment that took years to build.

Those numbers matter because sustainability claims without documentation are a liability. If you're evaluating any denim supplier, ask for the certifications: GOTS for organic fiber, GRS for recycled content, ZDHC for chemical management. If the response is vague, that's a red flag.

Quality-wise, the standards for denim are well established, and if you're going to do this professionally, get familiar with them:

  • Color consistency across rolls: Industry standard color tolerance is Delta E < 2 for brand-critical colors. Delta E of 2–4 is noticeable to trained observers; above 4 is visible to most people. In other words, if your vendor's jeans come in slightly different blues from roll to roll, your customers will notice, even if they can't point at why.
  • Shrinkage: Raw (unsanforized) denim shrinks 5–8% after first wash. Sanforized denim should be within 1–3%, depending on construction. We test every lot and share the data. If a mill can't produce shrinkage test reports, walk away.
  • Tensile strength: For woven fabrics, minimum tensile strength is typically 20–40 kgf per 5cm strip, depending on weight. That's what keeps seams from splitting during wear.

When I'd advise against this route: denim is a poor fit for lightweight summer blouses, formal wear, athletic apparel, or anything that needs to drape like silk. The hand feel is wrong, and the weight is working against you. Be honest about whether you need a workhorse fabric or a whisper-thin one. Denim is the former.

Scenario B: Upholstery With a Rich, Immediate Visual

A different question I get from furniture and interior brands: "Is red velvet upholstery fabric a smart purchase?" It can be, for the right project. Red velvet delivers instant visual impact—it photographs beautifully, which is why it dominates boutique hotel lobbies and high-end event spaces. But its performance depends on quality metrics most buyers never ask about.

Here's the checklist I use when reviewing velvet deliveries:

  • Rub count (Martindale): For upholstery, you need at least 25,000 cycles. Heavy-duty commercial-grade is 30,000–50,000. If someone quotes you a velvet below 20,000, that's a decorative fabric being passed off as upholstery-grade. It will wear through in a season.
  • Pile density: Run your hand against the pile—if you can see the backing through sparse tufts, the velvet is poor quality. Upholstery-grade velvet typically has 4,000–6,000 yarns per square inch. Low pile density means crushing and flattening under use.
  • Fire retardancy: In the US, upholstery must meet TB 117-2013. In Europe, it's EN 1021. Verify that the flame-retardant finish doesn't rely on PFCs—those are being phased out for good reason, and some cheap imported velvets still use them.
  • Colorfastness: Red is the hardest color to make fast, and a red velvet that bleeds onto a white sofa cushion is a customer-service disaster waiting to happen. Crocking tests (dry and wet rub) should be run before you commit to production.

When I'd advise against this route: if the sofa is for a family room with kids and dogs, honest answer: don't. Pile fabrics trap dust, dander, and hair, and while a red velvet sofa is dramatic, it's also a commitment to a very specific maintenance routine. Also—and I learned this the hard way—never assume "same specifications" means identical performance across vendors. I did once, with a reputable supplier no less. Turned out each batch had slightly different pile density and rub count, and we caught it only after a claim from a commercial client. Now every contract includes explicit Martindale and pile density requirements.

And on the cost subject, there's a trap I see every year: teams save €2,000 by choosing a budget velvet, then spend €18,000 managing the consequences—replacement, shipping, claims, lost reputation. I've lived it: one quality issue cost us a $22,000 redo and delayed our launch by six weeks. The "budget vendor" choice looked smart until we saw the quality. Redoing the production run cost more than the original "expensive" quote.

Scenario C: Lightweight Shirts and Blouses With Beautiful Drape

The third common scenario: your product is women's blouses, men's dress shirts, or resort wear. You need something that drapes cleanly, breathes in warm weather, and takes dye vibrantly. That's where rayon fabric shirts come in—though I'd rather you look at lyocell or modal, which are rayon's more robust regenerated-cellulose cousins.

Rayon has three genuine advantages:

  • Drape: It hangs beautifully, which is why designers love it for fluid silhouettes.
  • Moisture management: In tropical and hot climates, the fiber structure absorbs moisture far better than synthetics like polyester.
  • Dye absorption: Rayon takes color deeply and evenly, which is why those saturated summer prints look so vivid.

But if you're sourcing rayon, you need to know where quality failures happen:

  • Shrinkage: Untreated rayon can shrink 3–7% on first wash. If your garment shrinks unevenly—because the fabric wasn't properly pre-shrunk—the seams will pucker and the fit will distort. Insist on multiple wash-cycle shrinkage data from your supplier, not just the first wash. Learned never to assume the pre-production proof represents the final product after receiving a batch that looked nothing like what we approved.
  • Pilling: Rayon has a reputation for pilling, and it's earned. The difference between good and bad rayon comes down to fiber length. Long-staple rayon pills far less than short-staple. Ask for fiber length specs when comparing suppliers.
  • Fabric weight: For a classic shirt, 120–150 gsm is the sweet spot. Lighter gets delicate; heavier gets clunky in the seams.
  • Colorfastness: Red and bold prints are especially risky in rayon. Run a crocking test before production, not after.

When I'd advise against this route: rayon isn't the answer for performance wear, daily workwear in high-abrasion environments, or products that will be machine-washed aggressively. It ages faster than denim, it wrinkles more than synthetic blends, and it requires a more careful customer. If your target buyer wants easy-care garments, choose a polyester blend or a technical fabric instead.

How to Decide: A Practical Framework

Most people I meet already know which scenario they're in—they just haven't been honest with themselves about it. If you're still deciding, run through these five questions in order:

  1. What is the end use? Apparel, upholstery, or something in between? This determines the entire quality framework.
  2. Who is the end customer? What do they value: durability, luxury, sustainability, ease of care? Their values dictate how much a fabric's "story" matters.
  3. What is your sustainability mandate? If your brand makes public commitments, you need verified data and certifications. If sustainability is a nice-to-have, you can prioritize cost differently.
  4. What is your tolerance for quality claims? Which imperfections would your customers reject—color variance, shrinkage, pilling? Rank them.
  5. What is your product's most likely failure mode? Choose a fabric that addresses that specific failure, not a generic "premium" option.

If your product is apparel and durability is priority one, you're in Scenario A territory. If it's furniture and visual impact leads, you're looking at Scenario B. If it's shirts and drape plus breathability are non-negotiable, Scenario C is your lane. And if none of those fit, we need to have a different conversation entirely.

As a closing thought: the conversation about fabric choice is really a conversation about context. What's right for a premium denim brand in Copenhagen is wrong for a furniture manufacturer in Milan. What's right for a lightweight shirt collection in Singapore is wrong for a winter workwear line in Toronto. There is no universal "best fabric"—there's the best fabric for your product, and the supplier who can prove it with data.

There's something satisfying about guiding a client through this and watching them succeed with the right fabric. After all the stress and coordination, seeing it delivered on time and performing as specified—that's the payoff. And honestly, it's the reason I've stayed in quality for over four years. The data doesn't lie. And when you build your entire approach on verified quality standards, you rarely have to (note to self: that's the lesson worth documenting).
